2018 Rippling

I recently have been exploring the basic structure and principleof soundand I was able to build endless algorithm by only using speakers and copper wires. The principle is simple. The speakers’ terminals are directly connected to power supply and their diaphragm moves in and out when they are connected and disconnected. I’ve attached thin wire on the diaphragm of the speaker and extend it through vertical foam and horizontal foam. On the other side, there is another long wire and when they touched together, the speaker pops up and make attached wire vibrate as well as other side wire. Because of tension and gravity, they make speaker move as a foam of feedback movement.

‘Aeternitas’ which can be interpreted as eternity has to do with this work. An infinite loop, a symbol of eternity, is a string that input and output are connected. In other words, it reminds me of the feedback phenomenon, because the feedback phenomenon is also the principle that the beginning and the end are connected to each other and infinitely extended. As I mentioned earlier, this feedback has been used many times in my works. In this work, I will use feedback as a physical algorithm rather than a digital algorithm. The infinite pendulum movement and sound that are constantly made can be interpreted as the power source of an organism. In this regard, the wires that form the overall shape of the work can be further developed and transformed the shape or they would exist as an environment, such as a tree or a forest.

‘Symphonia’ can be interpreted as chorus or harmony. The wire vibrates to the frequency of the speaker, as two different objects resonate at a certain frequency. As different loudspeakers produce different sounds by different frequencies, the wires are transformed into different forms by different frequencies. Using this principle, the frequency of the loudspeaker can be controlled by microcontroller and the shapes and foams of the lines are determined accordingly. The final form of this work would be a kinetic sculpture, which would look like an artificial creature.

'Penumbra' is a weak shadow between light and darkness, and it can be interpreted as an ambiguous thing that exists in the middle or not. I think that this is closely related to the theme of between noise and music, which is a recent interest. If the noise has a constant beat, it can be interpreted as a music or rhythmical sound. In this work, it is possible to produce a specific beat because the work has a repetitive sequence. Also, when the tempo becomes shorter, it changes to a specific note, which can produce a specific melody. The third form of the work will be a sound installation where wires and speakers will interact with each other.
